Trees and shrubs should be carefully chosen to enhance the overall landscape picture. Consider space requirements
for each individual tree or shrub in grouping varieties together. Color(both summer and fall) are also
considerations to add variety to the landscape throughout the seasons.
Once tree and shrub varieties are selected, check soil and climate requirements for each variety. Colorado is
Zone 4 and 5, so be sure that you pick species that flourish in our climate. There are several soil types in the
Rocky Mountain region. Types include heavy, light, sandy, clay, loam, poor or good. It may help to have
your soil type checked if you are not sure what type is in your landscape.
Water requirements are also a consideration as Colorado can experience drought. Select drought-tolerant
varieties if you prefer low water use. Some varieties will require additional water during hot summer
months as well as especially dry periods during the winter.
