Festuca glauca 'Boulder Blue'
Unique Features: Blue Fescue is native to Europe and this cultivar originated in Colorado around 30 years ago and is growing strong. It is a cool season small semi-evergreen clumping grass. In our area we’re on the tan side of semi-evergreen. The stiff narrow blades are an icy metallic blue with a stronger darker blue than Elijah’s Blue Fescue and is usually considered the ‘bluest of the blues’. Fescues do best with an April trim and tidy up, sometimes the rabbits will do this for you but the deer don’t bother it. The wheat like sterile seed heads extend 3’’ to 6’’ above the center portion of the foliage and start out a blue green color changing to tan. The seed heads are usually trimmed off leaving just the tidy blue mound. This grass will die back in the center after several years. Dividing the clump every 2 to 3 years will avoid this issue. Boulder Blue can function as the ‘filler ‘in’ containers.
