Unique Features: The London Planetree is a vigorous growing hybrid of the eastern and western Sycamores. This tree has a red-brown to grey outer bark, which exfoliates to reveal the cream to olive colored inner bark. This gives the tree a mottled look, getting whiter with age. The maple-like leaves are very large, 6” to 7” across, but do not show much fall color. The tree produces 1’’ diameter round seed pods that dangle on long stems into the winter, at which point they shatter, releasing tiny airborne seeds. Younger trees should be wrapped in the winter.
