Pinus heldreichii leucodermis 'Emerald Arrow'
Unique Features: The Emerald Arrow is a cultivar of Bosnian pine that grows at an intermediate and has a potential lifespan of about 40 years. This two needle pine has dark green foliage that holds its color well through all 4 seasons. The Emerald Arrow usually grows in a conical form with a 2:1 aspect but can develop an even narrower form. The spring buds are in the form of upward pointing white ‘candles’ from which new needles emerge, usually in the May/June time frame. Pinching or cutting these buds back in the spring, between March and May, will limit the amount of new growth for that year and control the size of the tree. This pruning will encourage more back budding which increases the density of branching. Continuing this type of pruning on sides of the tree will slowly develop more of a columnar form.
