Winter Care For Outdoor Containers

Give Jack Frost the Cold Shoulder: Keep Your Ceramic Pots cozy with these winter care tips!

Ceramic pots are generally durable and resistant to cold temperatures, but it’s still important to take some precautions to ensure their longevity during winter.

  1. Choose the Right Location:

Place your ceramic pots in a sheltered location, such as against a wall or under the eaves of your house, to provide some protection from harsh winter winds and an unruly snow shovel.

2. Elevate the Pots:

Elevate the pots slightly by placing them on pot feet or bricks. This will help prevent the pots from sitting directly on cold surfaces, which can transfer more cold to the roots of the plants. Small wooden blocks can help raise the pot off the ground, improving drainage and preventing the pot from sitting in water. This is important as excess moisture can contribute to cracking in freezing temperatures.

  1. Add Mulch:

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants in the pot. Mulch helps insulate the soil, regulate temperature, and retain moisture. It can also protect the roots from extreme temperature fluctuations.

  1. Watering Considerations:

Water the plants appropriately based on their winter needs. While it’s important to keep the soil from drying out completely, overwatering can also be a problem. Ensure proper drainage and water only when the soil is dry to the touch.

  1. Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes:

Try to avoid exposing the pots to rapid temperature changes. For example, bringing a frozen pot into a warm environment can cause thermal shock and lead to cracks.

  1. Inspect Regularly:

Regularly check your pots for any signs of damage, including cracks. If you notice any issues, take action promptly to prevent further damage.
