Winter Water Care for Maples

Caring for Maples in Colorado: Essential Tips for Thriving Trees
Maple trees can thrive in Colorado’s unique climate, but it’s important to remember that they originally come from regions with consistent soil moisture throughout the year, particularly during the winter months.
As early as February or March, maples begin to move their sap. If these trees experience insufficient water during this critical period, they may form a sap seal, leading to dieback in branches beyond this seal. To keep your maple healthy, follow these watering guidelines: provide 10 gallons of water per caliper inch (diameter) of the tree each week. For example, a tree with a 2-inch caliper requires 20 gallons of water weekly. It’s crucial to water your maple at least twice a month from the time you winterize your irrigation system in the fall through February. As the season progresses into March, increase the frequency to once a week. By April, transition into your summer watering schedule, ensuring your tree receives water three times a week. Keep in mind that snowfall typically does not count as sufficient watering unless it’s a heavy spring snow.
Additionally, fertilizing your maple tree is essential; aim to fertilize three times throughout the spring months (April, May, June) and maintain a consistent watering routine to support healthy growth. With proper care, your maple can flourish in Colorado’s environment.
