Malus domestica ‘Golden Delicious’
White
Unique Features: It is referred to by both color names, but it is not closely related to the Red Delicious. The Golden Delicious came from a chance seedling and the tree was purchased by Stark Brothers in 1914. They named it Golden Delicious in order to market with their Red delicious apple. The fruit is large, 3’’, with a yellowish green skin which can show a red blush. It ripens around mid-September to mid-October and keeps for 3 to 6 months refrigerated. The juicy flesh is fine textured with low acidity and is slow to brown, but it does bruise easily so careful handling is in order. The flavor is very sweet and mild with a bit of a spicy taste; overall superior to the red delicious for fresh eating. It also shines in pies, sauces and preserves. The Golden Delicious is classed as self-fruitful and can produce on its own but is better with a pollinator. The Golden Delicious is moderately resistant to fire blight.
