Populus tremula 'Erecta'
Yellow, Orange
Growth Rate: Fast, 12’’ to 36” per year
Unique Features: This a strictly columnar form of European Aspen. The leaves are slightly different from the Quaking Aspen in that they have a more rounded shape with scalloped edges. Their fall colors can also have more of an orange shading. Swedish Aspens can provide a quick growing (albeit short lived) summer screen for lateral shade or privacy. Aspens are naturally a transitional tree in forest development and this characteristic can be used in a yard situation. If you plant them with slower growing, longer lasting trees then you will have a replacement for the aspens when they have reached their limit. Aspens are primarily a clonal reproducing tree so if you have enough space then you can leave them on their own and have a self-replenishing Aspen grove though it will have a tendency to set its own boundaries.
