Prunus avium ‘Bing’
Yellow
Unique Features: There are more than 1000 varieties of sweet cherries and Bing is what they’re all compared to. It is self-sterile and requires a pollinator. Either the Stella or Lapins will do the job, and produce their own crops of sweet(er) cherries with or without a Bing. The abundant white flowers emerge in early spring and are fragrant and frost hardy to 28 degrees, to help ensure fruit production, but remember we’re still in Colorado. The large cherries are heart shaped, semi-freestone, juicy and sweet. The Bing cherries tend to ripen more consistently (at the same time) than most other sweet cherries, but it is a good idea to sample the fruit before picking because cherries do not ripen off the tree. The darkest colored cherries will be the ripest. Our western semi-arid climate helps with disease resistance. The birds will be the biggest problem, so invest in some bird nets.
