Unique Features: Also known as the Evans Bali or just Evans. This naturally compact, very hardy cherry originated in Alberta, Canada and the name was changed from Evans to Bali. In the U.S. the Evans cherry is grafted, which can alter the size as well as the hardiness, but it is still quite compact and solidly zone 4 hardy. It is a ‘sour’ cherry, so it is self-fertile and produces a heavy crop with just one tree. The fruit has a higher sugar content than most other ‘sour’ cherries, and when fully ripe it is suitable for fresh eating. When picked earlier it is great for pies. The 1’’ cherries are bright red with yellow flesh, and as the season progresses, they become a darker red and the sugar content goes up. That is when they are ready for fresh eating, if the birds have not eaten them first. Netting the trees will give you a better chance of having some fruit for yourself.
