Unique Features: The Romeo Dwarf cherry (as well as the Juliet and Cupid) is part of the Romance series of dwarf cherries developed by the University of Saskatchewan and released in 2004.  The plants in this series are based on European and Mongolian sour cherries and have Brix (sugar content) ratings in the high teens to the lower twenties.  For comparison, the Bing cherry has a 34 Brix.  The red cherries darken towards black as they ripen and the sugar content is high enough that they are primarily used for fresh eating, juicing and processing. The sour cherry heritage gives the fruit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. A little later bloom time and extreme cold hardiness make the series great for high altitude and northern climates. The Romeo cherry has an 18 Brix and weighs in at 5 grams.  If you want to enjoy any of the fruit then net for birds and fence for deer.
