Unique Features: The Snow Fountains cherry (also known as the Higan cherry) is a smaller weeping form of flowering cherry. It came from an Ohio nursery in 1985 and went on to become the most popular of the weeping cherry trees. It blooms relatively early, April, with clouds of single white blossoms and can bloom for up to 3 weeks, spring frosts permitting. It is derived from a naturally weeping form but can sprout an occasional upward pointing branch which can be pruned away. The branches can extend down to lay on the ground, and should be pruned up to at least 6’’ above ground level. Developing a higher canopy, whether even or irregular, vary the look of your Snow Fountain. These trees can produce sparse red-black fruit which is not palatable for us, but the birds relish them.
