Unique Features: This is a very tough tree. Chokecherries grow all across North America, usually along seasonal run off areas-creeks. They can thrive in the wet springs, and endure the hot dry summers. Chokecherries bloom in early spring with elongated drooping clusters of tiny white flowers that are extremely fragrant and are a magnet for early pollinators. As the flowers fade in summer the foliage emerges green and rapidly turns to a deep red-purple, which remains until the leaves fall. In the summer ¼” purple black chokecherries are produced. The fruit has an astringent taste and is mostly one large seed. With sufficient sugar it can be processed into jelly or wine but you but you have to beat the birds to them. These trees do sucker around the base of the trunk and that can be pruned back.
