Unique Features: The Kentucky Coffeetree is an extremely adaptable and durable tree. It is able to tolerate most types of soil (including our high pH alkaline soil), wet or dry conditions and temperatures down to -30 degrees, and it has few disease or insect problems. It grows at a moderate rate into a narrow crowned, variably structured tree sometimes developing codominant leaders. The doubly compound leaves can be 3’ long and 2’ wide, emerging late and dropping early. Both male and female trees have clusters of greenish white flowers in late spring to early summer, which are usually hidden by the foliage. The female flowers are larger and produce 4”-6” seed pods. The seed pods stay on the tree all winter and drop in spring. The tough, durable pods are hard coated and the seeds seldom sprout. They were used as a coffee substitute. This tree is approved by the Town of Parker.
