Malus 'Brandywine'
Pink
Orange, Purple
Unique Features: The Brandywine Crabapple grows at a moderate rate into an upright, broad oval shape. The leaves emerge a brick red color that matures to green. The spring flowers are large (1 ¼’’) double rosy pink. The double flowers, somewhat unusual for a crabapple, give the Brandywine the impression of a flowering cherry tree. The flowers are both fragrant and long lasting. It produces yellow green crabapples with a red blush about 1 ¼’’ in diameter. This is a little too large for the birds to handle, but it is edible for people. It is good enough for fresh eating (it is tart, but not bitter) and can be processed into jellies or spreads and even added to ciders in order to dry the taste. The Brandywine Crab has good resistance to Fire Blight and is, as are all crabapples, approved by the Town of Parker.
