Unique Features: The Consort Black Currant is an underused super fruit with (by weight) 4 times the vitamin C as oranges and twice the antioxidants as blueberries. It was developed in Ottawa, Canada as a variety resistant to White Pine Blister Rust. It has small yellow-green, self-fertile flowers in the spring, which mature to a musky sweet tart black berry a little less than ½’’ in diameter. A mature plant can produce 10 to 15 pounds of fruit, tasty enough for fresh eating but prized for preserves. It produces the most fruit on 1st year canes and a little on 2nd year canes. In the winter, prune it back to 3-5 canes then in the spring it will have lots of new shoots. Thin to the strongest 6 to 8 shoots. Net the shrubs for bird protection.
