Unique Features: The Red Lake currant originated from the University of Minnesota and was introduce in 1933. Now it is the most widely grown Red Currant in the U.S., accounting for most of Red Currant production. The Red Lake currant blooms in late April to early May with yellow green flowers in dangling clusters, which mature into clusters of ¼” bright red berries that ripen in mid to late July. This currant is self-fertile, so there is abundant fruit with just one plant (3-4 quarts from a mature shrub) but more with multiple plants. The juicy berries are very tart and are usually used for making jelly. This currant produces fruit on 2-3 year old canes so pruning 25% of the thickest, oldest canes back to ground level every March will result in good harvests with enough new canes growing for future harvests. The Red Lake currant can function well as an edible ornamental.
