Unique Features: The Rocky Mountain Douglas fir is a large tree that grows moderately quickly into relatively slender conical shape. At our altitude they are usually found among stands of Ponderosa pines which provide a micro climate suitable to the firs. The needles of the Rocky Mountain Douglas firs are more apt to a bluish green in contrast to the dark yellow green needles of the Costal Douglas firs. The needles of both varieties grow radially all around the branch which is part of their appeal as a cut Christmas tree. Douglas firs are also an important timber tree. The Douglas firs’ narrower profile makes it suitable for a large yard tree but it will need adequate irrigation, room and an eastern exposure to help conserve some humidity.
