Unique Features: Hameln is a compact cultivar of Fountain grass from Germany and is considered one of the best varieties. It is a sterile variety of Pennisetum and considered non-invasive. This is a warm season grass so doesn’t start growing in the spring until the soil temperature is 50 degrees for several weeks. In summer the ½’’ wide arching blades are dark green and grow in a fountain like spray. Later, in mid-June, the feathery and bristly cattail like blooms begin to appear. The light tan bottlebrush blooms are held slightly above the foliage in the same fountain like spray and mature to a pinkish brown in fall. Since this is a sterile cultivar the blooms and included seeds can be left for the song birds. The blooming period continues through the summer and fall until the first hard freeze. Then then the flower spikes shatter leaving only stems. Hameln is resistant to deer and rabbits.
