Unique Features: Red Head Fountain grass is one of the largest varieties that grow in our area and works well as a specimen or mass plantings.  It grows into a little more of an upright mound, taller than wide, different from most other Pennisetums. This is a warm season grass so doesn’t start growing in the spring until the soil temperature is 50 degrees for several weeks.  The narrow ribbon like foliage starts emerging in mid to late spring quickly reaching about 4’ tall.  In later summer the bottle brush like blooms begin to show up.  They start out with a smoky reddish to red purple color.  The plumes can grow to 8’’ long and 3’’ wide, as they grow the colors change to more of a silvery tan.  The seeds within the plumes are attractive to birds but the seeds are fertile so there can be some reseeding though Red Head is not considered invasive in our area.  Red head is deer resistant.
