Unique Features: Jahns Prairie gooseberry came from a wild specimen collected from the plains in Alberta, Canada. It is a different species, known as the Canadian or Northern gooseberry.  The fruit is larger and more rounded, starting out green then turning to reddish pink and finally maroon with light green highlights when fully ripe and at its sweetest. If you prefer tarter fruit, just pick earlier! Jahns’ fruit is great for fresh eating, preserves, dried fruit and even wine and marinade. It does have respectable thorns, which can deter the deer, and is useful for planting in the dappled shade of fruit trees to attract early pollinators and discourage deer. Jahns has resistance to American powdery mildew (the most common gooseberry issue) as well as leaf spot, grey mold, white pine blister rust, aphids, and sawflies.
