Vitis labrusca ‘Concord Seedless’
None
Unique Features: This is a seedless variety of the most popular grape in the U.S., the Concord, the grape that made ‘Welch’s’ famous. Dr. Welch started producing juice in 1869. The Concord was developed in the Concord, Massachusetts area and is a variety or the native Fox grape, but its genetic makeup is about 1/3 vinifera (European) heritage. The seedless variety came along later and is smaller and sweeter, and ripens about a week earlier in mid to late September. The medium to large fruit, ¾”, is blue black slip skinned with green black flesh. The grapes are aromatic with a very sweet musky flavor. Besides fresh eating the fruit is great for juices, jellies, pies and (sweet) wines. The Seedless Concord grape has exceptional vigor and disease resistance and, as with most grapes, is self-fertile.
