Vitis ‘Edelweiss’
Unique Features: The Edelweiss grape was developed by Elmer Swenson and released by the University of Minnesota in 1978. It is a hybrid of two North American grapes. Originally it was introduced as a table grape, and later became popular in the production of juice and sweet to semi-sweet white wines. The vigorously growing vines have medium sized sweet and aromatic slipskin berries, with seeds. They are held in large, loose clusters weighing up to a pound. A vine can have up to 11 pounds of fruit when pruned for maximum yield. It grows best in soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5, so a pH check might be in order. Pine needle or oak leaf mulch can help and soil sulfur can also lower the pH. If it is grown near a lawn, be aware that is very susceptible to 2-4D and Dicamba found in lawn weed control products.
