Unique Features: Hardy Pampas grass is native to the Mediterranean area and south wester Asia has established populations in North America. This is one of the largest ornamental grasses with a substantial base of grey green foliage and stalks that can extend up to 12’ of more. The bloom structures at the top of the stalks are 1’ to 2’ in length and about 4’’ wide with a reddish brown color that shows some purple tones. As the blooms mature to seed heads the color changes to tan and then to a creamy white getting fluffier all the while. The stalks can be cut for use as floral decorations at any point in their growth stage. Cutting the stalks earlier will also reduce the chances of reseeding. After 3 to 4 years the center of the clumps will die out (this happens with most ornamental grasses) and that is when the clumps should be divided in the spring when the grass is cut back.
