Crataegus laevigata ‘Crimson Cloud’
Red, Pink
Unique Features: This is a very showy variety of English hawthorn. Without training it can develop an erratic form, which is part of its charm. However, it can be pruned into a more formal shape and, since this tree is thornless, the job is easier (or at least less painful). Left unpruned, the extending branches develop a slight droop which gives this tree a delicate, wispy winter silhouette. The foliage is medium green with deeply incised lobes. The profuse small flowers are a rich pink-red, with a white star in the center, and are fragrant and attractive to bees. The equally profuse fruit is less than ½’’ in size and favored by the birds. The Crimson Cloud has good resistance to leaf blight.
