Unique Features: The Russian Hawthorn grows moderately into an open rounded shape, and the foliage is relatively small and lobed. Clusters of single white flowers bloom in late spring, and develop into bright red berries which are favored by birds. The zig-zag form of the branching gives this hawthorn an interesting winter silhouette. This is a thorny hawthorn with small, ½’’, very sharp thorns. When young the bark is smooth and a golden-orange in color; with time it becomes grey-brown and shaggy (exfoliating). This tree is approved by the Town of Parker and is a ‘Plant Select’ tree. The ‘Plant Select’ program is a collaboration between the green industry, Colorado State University and Denver Botanic Gardens. The plant selections from this program are well suited to our challenging western environment.
