Unique Features: The Blue Point is a cultivated variety, cultivar, of Chinese juniper selected in the 1970’s from a female seedling grown by Monrovia nursery. This slow growing variety is densely branched with blue green to blue grey prickly foliage. Its shape is more of a teardrop (the height to width ratio is about 3:2) rather than a column meaning you don’t have to plant as many to form a screen but you lose more yard space. The Blue Point’s slower growth rate and dense branching habit make it a popular subject for both topiary and Bonsai plantings. In heavy clay the Blue Point (and other trees and shrubs needing good drainage) should be planted ‘proud’. That is, the top of the root ball is above ground level and the lightly amended backfill is sloped up to the edge of the root ball with nothing on the top.
