The Twilight Zone cultivar this North American prairie grass was developed by Walter’s Gardens in Michigan and released in 2014. It is a warm season grass so doesn’t start growing in the spring until the soil temperature is 50 degrees for several weeks. When the blades emerge in later spring they are blue green and as summer arrives the ¼’’ wide blades begin to turn a silvery mauve color showing good color as early as midsummer. The color intensifies as summer progresses and melds with the bronze purple flower stalks eventually turning more red purple. Tan flowers develop into small horizontal fluffy white seed which can persist into winter when the foliage turns to a tawny brown.
