Unique Features: Maiden grass is native to Asia growing in most of China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.  It does best in moist well drained soil but can tolerate some periods of drought once established.  When the tips of the grass blades turn to tan and twist into spirals, then it is not getting enough water. Maiden grass is a warm season grass so doesn’t start growing in the spring until the soil temperature is 50 degrees for several weeks.  It maintains a showy presence through the winter so the best time to cut it back is around mid-spring.  The horizontal yellow bands on the deep green leaves of Gold Bar grass give it shimmering look which is accented when the leaves move in the breeze.  It is a later bloomer so it often doesn’t have enough time to produce flowers and seed heads but the coppery bronze fall color with traces of variegation is some compensation.
