Acer ginnala
Red, Orange
Unique Features: This small maple grows moderately into a rounded form and can be grown both as a single trunk and multi stemmed tree. This is another tree from the biologically diverse Amur River Valley region between Siberia and China. This cultivar has more lustrous foliage than the species. The leaves have three lobes, with the middle lobe significantly longer than the other two. Rich green leaves change to a consistent dark red to red-orange color in fall. The insignificant March/April flowers develop into double winged seed structures (samaras) with a pink color in the later summer. As with most maples it can develop chlorosis, or iron deficiency, in our high pH soil. This can be treated with a chelated iron supplement or natural soil sulfur, which will lower the soil pH and make existing iron more accessible to the tree.
