Unique Features: This is a cultivar of our native western Bigtooth maple, closely related to the Sugar Maple, which was developed by New Mexico State University. It was selected for its superior and consistent fall color, which is a vibrant orange-red, and compact size. The tatter and scorch resistant leaves are smaller than those of an eastern sugar maple, and usually have 3 major lobes with deep indentations. It grows relatively slowly so it does not need frequent pruning. The Mesa Glow is also more tolerant of our high pH soils so it is less likely to develop chlorosis.  It starts moving sap early so it should be winter wrapped, and will need a little extra water in the late winter/early spring.  The moderate size and western heritage of this maple can bring the beauty of a sugar maple to smaller yards along the Front Range.
