Acer rubrum 'Magnificent Magenta'
Green
Red, Purple
Unique Features: The ‘Rubrum’ maple is native to the eastern North America, from Nova Scotia to Florida. The twigs, buds, flowers and seeds are all red on these maples, but the fall color can vary. It does fine with average moisture but can tolerate wet sites and even a little drought. The Burgundy Belle grows moderately into a nicely rounded form, and does have seeds. The leaves emerge reddish in color and mature to green. In fall they change to a vibrant red, and age to burgundy. In our high pH soil most maples can develop chlorosis, or iron deficiency, which can be treated with iron and sulfur soil amendments. Maples start moving sap early (Feb/Mar), and that makes them prone to ‘frost cracking’, which damages the circulatory system. To prevent this, wrap the tree from Thanksgiving until Easter. This ‘early awakening’ also necessitates an increase in winter watering.
