Acer x freemanii ‘Firefall’
Red, Orange
Unique Features: The Firefall Maple is another seedless hybrid of the red and silver maple. It grows rapidly (2’ to 3’ per year) into a narrower pyramidal form. The younger bark is pale silver grey and should be winter wrapped until it thickens. Put the wrap on around Thanksgiving and remove it around Easter. Fast growing trees such as the Firefall benefit from regular (3 to 5 years) pruning. Maples ‘wake up’ as early as February, and necessitate an increase in winter watering at this time. In our high pH soil, maples can often develop chlorosis, or iron deficiency, which can be treated with iron and sulfur soil amendments. In summer chlorosis is indicated by paler yellow green leaves with prominently darker green veins. Chlorosis can also be a factor in earlier fall color change.
