Acer saccharum 'Green Mountain'
Yellow, Orange
Unique Features: The Green Mountain Sugar maple has shown good adaptability in CO. It has improved performance in more restrictive growing areas, such as street strips, but the large size includes large roots, which can be disruptive to sidewalks. As with all sugar maples the Green Mountain has hard, strong wood that stands up to wind and snow load. It grows moderately into and upright oval shape, with large dark green waxy leaves that resist wind tatter. Sugar maples prefer more acidic soils, so supplementation with iron and sulfur will help prevent chlorosis. Maples start moving sap early (late fall to early spring) and that makes them prone to ‘frost cracking’, which damages the circulatory system of the tree. To prevent this, wrap the tree from about Thanksgiving to Easter. This ‘early awakening’ also necessitates an increase in the winter watering at this time.
