Unique Features: The Fireglow is a red foliaged Japanese maple that was introduced by a nursery in Milan, Italy. Spring starts with the pendulous, deep-red delicate flower clusters which mature into red samaras, double winged ‘helicopter’ seeds. The leaves emerge a fiery red color, more intense than that of the Bloodgood. They then mature to a lighter burgundy color, and in fall turn brilliant scarlet on the upper surface and cherry red on the underside. Our high altitude sunlight, low humidity and wind are hard on Japanese maples. They are best planted with an eastern exposure, and evergreens growing on the north and south sides would be ideal. An elevated planting with mulch on the slopes will help with both drainage and moisture retention. Container growing is also an option.
