Acer rubrum 'Northwood'
Red
Red, Orange
Unique Features: The ‘Rubrum’ maple is native to the eastern part of North America and is adapted to acidic soils, so it will need iron and sulfur soil amendments to avoid developing chlorosis. The twigs, buds, flowers and seeds are all red on this group of maples, but the fall colors can be shades of yellow, orange, red and burgundy. It does fine with average moisture but can tolerate wet sites. The Northwood cultivar grows moderately, into an upright oval shape. It has tiny red flowers very early in the spring, but does not produce any seeds, or samaras, from the flowers. Maple flowers aren’t very showy but they can be a treat for any early pollinators. The fall color of the 3-lobed leaves will be more intense with colder weather. As with other maples a little extra water in late winter/early spring will help prevent tip dieback. Winter wrapping is recommended.
