Acer grandidentatum 'Schmidt'
Yellow, Red, Orange
Unique Features: This is a cultivar of our native western Bigtooth or Canyon maple, closely related to the eastern Sugar Maple. It was selected for its superior mixed fall colors in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, as well as its compact size. It grows relatively slowly so it does not need frequent pruning. This maple is also more tolerant of our poor and high pH soil, making it less likely to develop chlorosis. The tatter and scorch resistant leaves are smaller than those of an eastern sugar maple, and usually have 3 major lobes with deep indentations. It should be winter wrapped and will need a little extra water in the late winter/early spring because maple ‘wake up’ early. It starts moving sap early so it should be winter wrapped, and will need a little extra water in the late winter/early spring. Bigtooth maple sap can be used to make syrup, however because of the small size it’s not very practical.
