Maple/ Sienna Glen
- This is an early example of the 'Freeman' series of maples, which includes the 'Autumn Blaze'
- Sienna was a naturally occuring cross between the red and silver maple
- Vigorous growth into a pyramidal form, larger than the 'Autumn Blaze'
- More cold hardy and less prone to frost cracking than the 'Autumn Blaze'
Acer x freemanii 'Sienna'
Yellow, Orange
Unique Features: The Sienna Glen started off the long line freemanii hybrids, which are a cross of red and silver maples. The Sienna Glen can produce some seeds, unlike most of its followers, and the fall color is more variable. It grows 2-3’per year but has a less congested growth habit with stronger branches, so it needs less frequent pruning. It has a better tolerance for alkali soils, but in our high pH soil will likely still need the occasional extra iron and sulfur. Maples start moving sap early and that makes them prone to ‘frost cracking’, which damages the circulatory system of the tree. To prevent this, wrap the tree from about Thanksgiving until Easter. This ‘early awakening’ also necessitates an increase in the winter watering at this time. Because of the early sap movement, the best time to prune maples is late summer to early fall.
