Unique Features: The Apollo is a dwarf sugar maple that will take more than 25 years to reach 30 feet in height. This is a heritage tree that can live up to 80 to 100 years. This is the best choice for a sugar maple to plant in a smaller yard. The lobed leaves are unusually large for a tree of this size, and they hold up well to heat without scorching. Pruning is limited to the occasional removal of crossing or rubbing branches. This is a great, low maintenance tree. The Apollo maples are usually grown as a low branched tree, so winter wrapping isn’t an issue. As with most maples, the Apollo starts pushing sap in late winter to very early spring and will need extra water at this time to prevent tip die back. This also means maples are best pruned in late summer to very early fall to prevent sap ‘bleeding’ in the spring.
