Acer saccharum ‘Whit XLIX’
Yellow, Red, Orange
Unique Features: The Powder Keg maple is derived from an eco-type (geographically isolated population of a species) of sugar maples found growing naturally the Caddo Mountain region of Oklahoma. That means it is better adapted to our environment than the eastern sugar maples. Powder Keg grows into an upright oval shape, just a little taller than the Flashfire. Powder Keg handles heat, drought, wind, leaf tatter and higher pH soils. The fall color comes a little later, beginning at the top of the tree and working its way down, and displays variants of yellow, orange, and red. The Powder Keg will benefit from a little extra iron and sulfur. Maples start moving sap early (late fall to early spring) and that makes them prone to ‘frost cracking’, which damages the circulatory system of the tree. To prevent this, wrap the tree from about Thanksgiving until Easter.
