Unique Features: The Trident maple is native to China, Japan and Korea. Its leaves have three pointed lobes, hence the name. The Trident maple grows to a moderate size, usually in a multi-stemmed form, but may be pruned into a single trunk tree with a nicely rounded shape. The growth is fairly rapid when young and slows with age. This characteristic makes the Trident maple one of the more popular Bonsai trees. The 2’’ to 4’’ long, three pointed leaves emerge red before turning to a glossy dark green. In fall the foliage fires up in a mixture orange, red and yellow. With age, light brown strips peel off to expose the cinnamon colored under bark, adding to the winter interest. Being a maple, it will benefit from iron and sulfur soil supplements in our higher pH soil, as well as some extra water in late winter to early spring.
