Unique Features: The Quercus bicolor, or Swamp White oak, is a North American native tree that grows in the north central U.S., edging slightly into Canada. It is found in mixed elm and maple forests along water courses or in lower areas. It can do well in wet areas or in moderate to low moisture areas. The ‘bicolor’ in this oak’s name refers the leaves which are large, glossy dark green on top with a much lighter fuzzy green on the underside giving a rippling look to the leaves in the wind. The American Dream has better branching, foliage density, disease resistance and fall color than the species, Swamp oak. It grows slowly into a broadly pyramidal form with a dense canopy. This oak can develop chlorosis, or iron deficiency, in our high pH soils so amending with iron and sulfur will help.
