Unique Features: The Crimson Spire oak is a hybrid of the columnar English oak and the American White oak. It grows moderately (fast for an oak) into a tight oval to conical shape with a very dense canopy and a well-defined leader. Though it is usually grown with branches close the ground, it can be pruned to support a higher canopy over time. Developing a moderate canopy, the distance from the ground to where the branches begin, imparts a more formal look to the tree. The leaves have rounded lobes and medium indentations. It takes about 20 years to start producing acorns, depending on how the tree was propagated. This tree works as a vertical accent or may be grown in multiples as a very large hedge. Oaks require and reward patience.
