Quercus coccinea

Unique Features: The Scarlet oak is native to the eastern U.S. and while it prefers acidic soil it is not as picky as the Pin oak. It can tolerate pH levels of 7.0 to 7.5, but fall color will be diminished. It is also known as the black, red or Spanish oak. Soil supplements containing iron and sulfur will help provide a deeper green leaf color in the summer, and a better red color in the fall. The Scarlet oak grows moderately (fast for an oak) into a large spreading form. The foliage is very similar to that of the Pin Oak, but the lobes are wider and not as bristly, and the sinuses are not quite as deep. Small acorns can start showing up after 20 years, or sooner depending on how it was propagated, with heavy crops after 50 years. Oaks are heritage trees that require and reward patience.
