Unique Features: The Skinny Genes oak is a relatively new cultivar developed from the Crimson Spire oak. It is about 50% narrower than the parent tree, but unfortunately it did not pick up the gene for red fall color. The Skinny Genes oak grows moderately (fast for an oak) into a tightly columnar form. It is usually grown with a very low canopy, but when it is pruned up to a medium canopy (4’) it takes on a more formal look. The dense, lustrous, and very dark green foliage is resistant to powdery mildew. The Skinny Genes can work well as a single tree for smaller yards, especially when pruned to develop a canopy, or as a durable, long-lasting privacy screen. Since it has English oak heritage it can hold its leaves during the winter (they will be brown). Oaks require and reward patience.
