Unique Features: The Autumn Blaze pear grows about 2’ per year, into an upright oval shape, and has a lifespan of about 30 years. It blooms in early spring, with white flowers in 3” clusters that can cover the tree. It blooms in early spring, so there is a chance of a late frost taking the flowers but tree itself should survive. With a milder spring the flowers can cover the tree, unfortunately they are odiferous, but the cooler temperatures of our springs tend to mask the ammonia like fragrance. The flowers are followed by small <1/2” fruit that persists on the tree into or through the winter unless taken by birds. The shiny dark green foliage is late to change in fall, making this a long season tree, but it can be caught by an early hard freeze and then the leaves don’t have time to color. Autumn Blaze pears are resistant to fire blight and on the ‘Town of Parker Preferred Species’ list.
