Unique Features: The Javelin pear in a recent introduction and is the narrowest of the columnar pear trees. It grows rapidly into an upright, narrow oval shape and has a potential lifespan of about 50 years. It blooms in early spring, with white flowers in clusters that can cover the tree. There is a chance of a late frost taking out the flowers, but the tree itself should survive. Unfortunately, the blooms are odiferous, having an ammonia like fragrance, but the cooler temperatures of our springs tend to subdue the aroma. The leaves emerge purple and mature to a bronze green. The flowers are followed by 1’’ to 1 1/4” fruit that persists on the tree into or through the winter. The Javelin has rough, warty bark for added winter interest. The Javelin is resistant to fire blight.
