Pyrus pyrifolia x ‘Tawara’
White
Yellow, Red, Orange
Unique Features: The Tawara pear was introduced by Jeanne & Jim Masuda of Park Creek Nursery in northern Colorado. It grows naturally into a compact, upright oval shape which can be controlled as part of the regular pruning required for any fruit tree. The Tawara is self- pollinating but the yields will be higher with another pear nearby. Most pears bloom in the same time frame, early in the season, and both European and Asian pears are compatible so there is a wide selection of pollinators. The fruit is about 2’’ to 2 ½’’ in diameter, round and colored from yellow to tan. The fruit can be eaten fresh from the tree and the sweet white flesh is crunchy like an apple’s. Asian pears are sometimes referred to as “apple pears”.
