Unique Features: This is a slower growing variety of Austrian, just how slow is somewhat debatable and it definitely varies.  It is very similar to the regular Austrian pine except for its growth rate which determines the size at a particular point in time. The needles are similar in size and longevity to those of a regular species Austrian pine.   The Compact Austrian and other pines can be bud pruned in the spring to help control size and to improve the density of branching.  This process is easy but tedious.  Shearing is also an option but it requires more technical expertise.  Both methods are more suited to smaller specimens.
