Unique Features: There are confusing aspects with the Bosnian pine as far as name and size. In short P. heldreichii is the correct name and these pines only live about 40 years in cultivation so around 30’ is about tops for this slow grower. During that time the tree grows into a tightly conical form with strong upward pointing branches. In our drier climate it drops the interior needles fairly rapidly yielding a ‘see through’ silhouette. Those features allow it to stand up well to wind and snow load. The two year cones emerge blue purple and age to more of an orange purple in the first year and they are brown the second year. This pine is suitable for water wise landscaping.
